Cane Corsos - Breed History

Cane Corsos are also known by the name Cane Corso Italiano in Italy. This dog was primarily used for guarding property and protecting cattle against wolves and cattle thieves; the use of the breed was very diversified. The breed also had a very acute hunting instinct.

Cane Corso's were also popular amongst drivers who transported goods through Italy. They ran along side the horse and cart and protected against highwaymen. For decades Cane Corso's were used for hunting large game such as wild boar, wolf and bear. These activities were very popular among the nobles who used both Segugio (tracker dogs) and Cane Corso together. Until a few years ago, the great Cane Corso, bred purely for its usefulness, is now becoming a popular breed. Their working quality, intelligence, and high trainability are what seems to attract people to this breed. Cane Corso is a powerful dog that can instinctively differentiate between dangerous situations and those that are not.

Cane Corsos - General Care

The Cane Corso sheds very little hair. This is the perfect dog for someone with allergies. Occasional brushing is all that is needed. A damp cloth wiped over the dog will remove any loose hairs. A grooming session once a day is usually sufficient to keep the dog's coat healthy and shiny. Teeth cleaning should be carried out on a regular basis. Ear cleaning is also a must in order to prevent infection and discomfort. Cane Corsos are low maintenance dogs and if you follow these basic recommendations on their upkeep, you will be the owner of a healthy and well-groomed dog.
