Te dogs were used as guards, protectors, police and track dogs. The coat is very short and dense as to be guaranteed a perfect impermeability; in winter there is a dense undercoat. The usual colors are the black and the brindle, but there are also exemplary fawn (frumentini) and grays.

This is a big dog whose height is from roughly 25" to 27" (64 to the 68 cms.) in the males and from 23.5" to 25" (60 to the 64 cms.) in the females, with tolerance of +/- 1" (2 cms.). An average weight of the males is from 99 to 110 lbs. (45 to 50 Kgs.) in the females from 88 to 99 lbs. (40 to 45 Kgs).
